Prostate Health: Does Prostate Removal Cause Erectile Dysfunction (ED)

So you just got your prostate removed, and now you’re wondering why certain things aren’t working like they did before…

Getting your prostate removed can and often does cause erectile dysfunction (ED). It is most likely to happen the closer you are post-op, and can understandably make any man a bit nervous about his future. At Men’s Health Solutions, we want you to know we can help you wherever you’re at, and that we are with you every step of the way - that’s why we are the highest rated men’s health clinic in Indianapolis.

But why does this tend to happen in the first place?

Here are a few contributing factors that can have an affect:

Prostate removed after the age of 60 - Unfortunately for whatever reason, 60 seems to be a typical age where the likelihood of ED is higher after prostate removal. Those that get their prostate removed after the age of 60 tend to have a harder time, and usually take a little longer, trying to correct their ED to get back to pre-op function, but that doesn’t mean you can’t!

Prior ED before surgery - If you suffered from erectile dysfunction prior to having your prostate removed, then chances are that you will have more work to do than the average male after prostate surgery. Although the surgery doesn’t help the cause, something else was clearly not functioning properly that caused your ED in the first place.

Poor overall health before and after surgery - It shouldn’t come as a surprise that simply being healthy can have a positive effect on your ED. Although it can help with countless bodily functions, most guys will probably clean up their diet and start exercising when this is what’s on the line.

Damaged nerves during surgery - During prostate removal surgeries, it is very common that nerves must be damaged in order to get free from the gland. Sometimes they can get tangled together, forcing doctors to have to cut and alter nerves in order to finish the surgery. However, this doesn’t help the cause of those worried about having erectile complications afterwards.

For a lot of guys going into prostate removal surgery, they might almost consider not doing it for this exact reason. We’re here to flip the script. We know things like this can be scary, and not just from a surgical standpoint, but from that of a man as well. You don’t want to lose one of the most distinct parts of your manhood, and we don’t want you to either.
